Stephen Colbert: “Jesus is a Liberal Democrat”

“Either we’ve got to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we’ve got to acknowledge that he commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy — without condition — and then admit… that we just don’t want to do it.”

  1. On the one hand, I really like this piece. It mocks the real spiritual confusion of American politics and hints at the some of distinctives of Jesus.

On the other hand, I think it’s important to say that the kingdom of God is fundamentally about creating a people – a community we typically call church – who live for the praise of his glory. This heavenly kingdom transcends the foibles of our earthly politics. (see Residents Aliens, Willimon & Hauerwas)

    • Good point Will. But then you still have the further question of to what extent it is an aspect of the church’s mission to advocate for justice outside our community. Seems to me Resident Aliens was reacting against mainline churches that had made political involvement the sum total of their mission. But perhaps most evangelicals still have the opposite problem…?
